Rethinking Interdisciplinarity as Intercultural Dialogue

This article critically reflects on phase two (2025/26) of the University of Warwick Enhancing Research Culture project ‘Countering Silos and Hierarchies through Peer-to-Peer Research-in-Progress Conversations’. Building on phase one’s emphasis on developing inclusive research conversation spaces, it foregrounds interdisciplinarity: how to design activities that enable interdisciplinary conversations as a form of ‘intercultural dialogue’. Drawing on participants’ written reflections, discussion transcripts and evaluations, we examine how teamwork-oriented design enabled participants to reflect, via exposure to alternative perspectives, on the disciplinary and professional assumptions they made regarding research practice. We argue that fostering research collaboration requires a more nuanced approach than simply bringing people together and expecting meaningful research exchange to just happen.
