    Special Issue: MRC@50
    Vol. 11 No. 4 (2024)

    This is the twenty-ninth issue of Exchanges and was first published in September 2024. It is a special issue containing papers inspired by and presented at the Modern Records Centre's MRC@50 Symposium hosted at Warwick in September 2023. This issue, like the event, celebrates a half-century of the archive's operations and impact, containing historical reflections as well as covering research the MRC’s collections helped enable. As such most papers in the issue cover social, political and societal issues from a strongly historical and sociological perspective. Additionally, the Editor-in-Chief’s editorial briefly introduces the issue and highlights other forthcoming issues, and other news about the journal.

    Special Issue: Research Culture
    Vol. 11 No. 3 (2024)

    This is the twenty-eighth issue of Exchanges, first published August 2024. This edition is a special issue comprising entirely of papers drawn from and inspired by the International Research Culture Conference (IRCC) 2023, hosted at the University of Warwick (Sept '23). As such it contains an extensive range of papers including elements of practice, policy, case study and personal reflection. It also includes considerations from the organisers on the direction of travel for future research culture conferences. Alongside this, the Editor-in-Chief’s editorial also provides an overview of the content and journey to publication of this issue, alongside a guide to future journal issues, contribution opportunities and social media activities.

Topics in this issue include: linguistic and cultural identities, metal health and criminal responsibility, multilingual news coverage and subtitling, undergraduate visual learning, academic publishing, virtual reality and the performing arts along with post-disciplinarity and the academy.     This is the twenty-sixth issue of Exchanges, marking a decade of publication. As a result, there is a celebratory theme as the editorial looks back over the past ten years. It also contains articles contributed by scholars within various disciplinary backgrounds and from around the globe, some of which resonate on the theme of ‘authentic interdisciplinary’. Article topics include: AI within academic publishing and the humanities, linguistic persuasion in advertising educational engagement in a post-COVID world, overcoming sustainability barriers and the representation of humans in Arabic art. The editorial also announces a new themed call for papers, alongside ways to contribute to future issues.

Topics in this issue include: Orwell, 1984 and contemporary British parliamentary debate, considerations of Wang and Munday's work on discourse analysis of translation and interpreting, John McGahern's fictive world and notions of utopian thinking, using Miro in teaching practice, an interview with Intissar Haddiya experiences as a novelist and poet and a book review of Wang and Munday’s work in translation and interpreting. The Editor-in-Chief’s editorial briefly introduces the issue and discusses the recent author survey feedback report, while highlighting contribution opportunities and Exchanges’ social media streams.

    Special Issue: The Anthropocene and More-Than-Human World

    This is the twenty-fourth overall and fifth special issue of Exchanges, first published in March 2023. The contents for this issue derive from a British Academy funded project – The Anthropocene and More-Than-Human World and its associated writing workshops. As such the issue draws together a range of articles inspired by the workshop and contributed by participants. Topics in this issue include: Aesthetics of disability, artificial pollinators and multispecies justice, conceptualizing the more-than-human world, empathy and Asian American sci-fi, ethnographic ecofeminism market gardening and soil care textiles and indigenous knowledge, the Great Barrier Reef and finally, Whaling and the Portuguese Empire. The Editor-in-Chief’s editorial briefly introduces the special issue, alongside updating readers of policy developments and future contribution opportunities while also highlighting Exchanges’ latest podcast episodes.

    This is the twenty-third issue of Exchanges, published in October 2022. As usual, this issue brings together a range of articles from scholars from a variety of different disciplinary traditions around the globe. Article topics in this issue include: fakery and animals within academic publishing practices, distributional thinking about film shot duration, the five forces framework and its insights into the electro-automotive industry, realism, reflections focussing on reality and research practice, an exploration of the unpublished novels of Anita Mason, a literature review on the theory and practice of Arnstein’s Ladder and finally, a critical reflection on the use of collage as an autoethnographic method. The Editor-in-Chief’s editorial also briefly introduces the issue, its contents and offers some insights into the development of the journal’s Editorial Board. It also reminds readers of the future opportunities for contributions to the title from authors old and new alike, and the journal’s expanding range of companion podcast episodes.

    Special Issue - The Lonely Nerd
    Vol. 9 No. 3 (2022)

    This is the twenty-second issue of Exchanges, published in August 2022. This is our fourth special issue focussing on cultural experiences around the theme of the lonely nerd. Developed in collaboration with scholars from the Universities of Oxford and SOAS, and with author contributions from around the world, the issue is in part an output from a workshop held at the University of Warwick in spring 2021. Article topics in this issue include: conceptions and perceptions of lonely nerds, diversity of nerd representation in film, television theatre, gaming and comic books, along with explorations of alienation, non-conformity and societal acceptance. Within the issue’s editorial the Editor-in-Chief briefly introduces the issue and its development, alongside providing an overview of its articles and the future opportunities for contributions from authors old and new alike. An introductory essay from the two special issue leads provides an overview of the workshop and special issue themes, providing a useful framing for readers in contextualising the articles within.

This issue contains a variety of articles from different corners of the disciplinary academic traditions, from authors around the globe. Article topics within include: schizoanalytic cartographies, post-urban life in the Alps, factual divergence and expert trust, challenging stereotypical representation of Italian women, environmental epiphanies, disability representation in the media; along with two extended conversations with noted scholars. The issue’s editorial by the Editor-in-Chief briefly introduces the issue and provides an overview of the articles published within it. It also highlights two opportunities for participation through a reader survey and an anniversary call for papers on ‘authentic interdisciplinary’, alongside the regular open call for contributions to future issues. Ways for readers and authors to engage with the journal in-between issues are also highlighted.

    This is the nineteenth issue of Exchanges, published in August 2021. This special issue brings a themed assortment of articles, reflections and discussions to our interdisciplinary readership. In this issue the papers were all inspired by or produced as a result of the student-led Then & Now: Arts at Warwick project and exhibition, which was hosted by the University of Warwick’s Faculty of Arts. Articles in this special issue tackle topics which include: retrospective, analysis and reflections on the project, considerations of student-led research, inclusivity, the university’s societal role, along with arts and cultural management matters. The issue’s editorial also briefly introduces the issue, alongside reminding readers of the various routes through which they can contribute to and engage with the journal.

Articles in this issue tackle topics which include: Gandhi’s musical legacy, the #MeToo movement’s impact on society, artificial intelligence in the legal profession, amateur stock trading activism and questions of ethics in academic publication. The issue’s editorial also provides a range of guidance and key areas of consideration for first time academic authors from an editorial perspective, alongside reminding readers of the various routes through which they can contribute to and engage with the journal.

    Special Issue: Climate Fiction
    Vol. 8 No. 2 (2021)

    This is the seventeenth issue of Exchanges, published in February 2021. This special issue brings an assortment of articles, reflections and discussions to our interdisciplinary readership, this time deriving from or inspired by the 20th International Conference of the Utopian Studies Society, hosted in Prato, Italy. Articles in this issue tackle topics as varied as: critiquing the conference itself, ecotopianism, literary and movie depictions of anthropogenic climate change, activism, behavioural and societal changes, as well as speculations on the global legacy of the current epoch. The issue also highlights the work of the journal’s post-graduate researcher associate editors programme, and the currently open calls for contributions.

    This is the sixteenth issue of Exchanges, published in Autumn 2020. This issue once again brings an assortment of articles, topics and authors to its interdisciplinary readership, this time highlighting strong resonances between the pieces of creativity and language acquisition. Articles in this issue deal with areas which include: applications of dramaturgy in studying the creative practitioners, the function of role-play within the acquisition of English as a second language, how non-native speakers of English can embrace and apply their cultural heritage to enhance teaching, considerations of truthfulness and autobiographical pacts within graphical literature and a healthy critique of Lehrer’s thesis of the functioning of creativity. The issue also includes a themed call for papers on the topic of ‘AI: Panic or Panacea’, as part of the issue’s editorial article.

    This is the fifteenth issue of Exchanges, published in summer 2020, which once again brings a diverse range of topics and authors to its interdisciplinary readership. This issue includes articles on game playing lizards, academic fraud, televisual Shakespeare, cultural cannibalism and reflections on computer gaming scholarship. It also contains a conversation with University College Dublin’s Professor Quinn DuPont on the topic of the Distributed Autonomous Organisation. This issue also includes a thematic call for papers on the theme of ‘Challenge and Opportunity’, as well as exploring recent developments in the journal and its online presence.

    Vol. 7 No. 1 (2019)

    The autumn issue of the Exchanges journal once again brings together a diverse range of topics and authors from around the globe. This issue includes articles on James Joyce, second language acquisition, flexible manufacturing systems, vehicle engineering along with reflections on academic impact and an interview with Professor Bryan Cheyette. The editorial reflects on aspects of academic and publishing communication. This issue also includes a thematic call for submissions on ‘falsehoods, misinterpretations and factual divergence’, along with guidance on the continuing open call for manuscript from by early career researchers.

    Vol. 6 No. 2 (2019)

    The spring 2019 issue of Exchanges features a number of original research articles dealing with topics including: parental social stigma, Indonesian educational policy, industrial image recognition and interpersonal communication. These are followed by a critical conference reflection and concludes with an index to the scholarly work and authorial contributors published within Exchanges since its inception. This issue includes a call for papers on the theme of ‘in-between spaces’, with guidance on general manuscript submissions to the journal by early career researchers.

  • Spring
    Vol. 5 No. 2 (2018)

    The spring 2018 issue of Exchanges, and the first under its new subtitle. Contains a themed section with several articles addressing the topic of Truth and Evidence, from differing and unique disciplinary perspectives. Alongside this, the journal also contains interviews with notable academics Stef Craps, Marion Demossier and Margaret Hills de Zárate; and closes with a critical reflection on a law conference. This article introduces the issue, an overview of its contents and moreover provides insights into the developmental progress of the journal itself.

    Vol. 5 No. 1 (2017)

    The October 2017 edition features conversations with Professor Denise Schmandt-Besserat, a renowned archaeologist and expert on token, and Professor Bill Maurer, a renowned cultural anthropologist, and with Professor David Greenwood, who leads the Advance Propulsion System team at Warwick Manufacturing Group and has a wealth of experience in the automotive industry. There is also a themed section on Movement.
